Root Canal Therapy Without the Fear

Root canal therapy has a reputation that it simply does not deserve. For most patients, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than getting a routine filling — and far less painful than leaving an infected tooth untreated. At North Frisco Dental & Orthodontics, we perform root canal therapy with precision and care, using modern techniques and anesthesia that keep you comfortable throughout the entire process.
If you are experiencing a severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity, or swelling around a tooth, root canal therapy may be exactly what you need to eliminate your pain, save your natural tooth, and protect your long-term oral health.

What is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is an endodontic treatment used to treat infection or inflammation deep inside a tooth. Every tooth contains a soft inner layer called the pulp — a network of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that helps the tooth develop. When bacteria reach the pulp through a deep cavity, a crack, or a traumatic injury, infection sets in and can cause significant pain, swelling, and — if left untreated — the eventual loss of the tooth.
During root canal therapy, the infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed, the inner canals of the tooth are cleaned and shaped, and the space is filled and sealed to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored — typically with a crown — to full strength and function. Despite what many patients fear, the tooth can continue to function normally for years, even decades, after successful root canal treatment.

Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy
- Severe, persistent toothache — especially when chewing or applying pressure
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the temperature source is removed
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- Swelling, tenderness, or a pimple-like bump on the gum near the affected tooth
- A deep cavity that has reached the inner pulp of the tooth
- A cracked or fractured tooth with exposed nerve tissue
- Pain that radiates from one tooth to the surrounding jaw or ear

What to Expect During Root Canal Therapy
Examination and X-rays
We assess the tooth, take X-rays to evaluate the extent of the infection, and confirm that root canal therapy is the appropriate course of treatment
Anesthesia
The area around the tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure actually is once the tooth is fully numb
Pulp removal
A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected or inflamed pulp tissue is carefully removed from the canals
Cleaning and shaping
The root canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare them for filling
Filling and sealing
The canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering
Crown placement
In most cases, a dental crown is placed over the treated tooth at a subsequent appointment to protect it and restore full function
Pain Relief Starts Here
A toothache that keeps you up at night or makes eating unbearable is not something you should have to push through. Root canal therapy is one of the most effective pain-relieving procedures in dentistry — and our Frisco team is here to make the experience as calm and comfortable as possible from start to finish.
The longer an infected tooth goes untreated, the greater the risk of the infection spreading to surrounding teeth and tissue. Don't wait — call us at (469) 850-5878 or schedule online today.
